چکیده

Aims and objectives/purpose/research questions: This paper investigates whether sustained immersion in a dominant second-language (L2) environment alters morphological processing strategies compared to those of L1-immersed speakers. Furthermore, we assess the methodological usefulness language-mode task light validity conducting native research on L2-immersed Design/methodology/approach: We use design stimuli previous long-lag visual lexical decision conducted with German speakers Germany this group as control. Thirty-two resident UK (>2 years; minimal day-to-day use) participated two experimental sessions (one containing 20-minute conversation German). Data analysis: The data shows clear differences between facilitation patterns L1 participants. display decreased sensitivity subtle well form condition similar effects seen L2 processing. Lexical decisions pseudowords based plausibility, however, remain similar. While pre-experiment resulted overall faster responses, there was no effect patterns. Findings/conclusions: is affected by continued exposure second language internal structure or morphologically complex items decreasing. attrition certain similarities Our findings also call for caution recruitment experiment Originality: Research scarce work has examined derived words. addition principled manipulation uncommon. Significance/implications: possible similarity L1-attrition L2-learner challenges concept ‘native’ notion ‘nativeness’ stable property. Further comparison these populations may lead more thorough understanding adaptability our system.

Morphological Processing of Regular Verbs in Native French Speakers

Over the past decades an extraordinary amount of psycholinguistic and neurolinguistic research has been carried out with the aim of understanding the nature of lexical representations and how these representations are accessed as we listen to or read words. The question that drives much of this research is whether the language processing system has access to a morpheme-based route to recognize ...

Morphological insensitivity in second language processing

Two competing explanations exist regarding the nature of morphological difficulty in adult second language acquisition: competence deficit versus performance deficiency. This study tested these explanations by examining English as a second language (ESL) learners’ morphological performance in reading comprehension tasks. Chinese ESL speakers were asked to read English sentences for comprehensio...

Native-like Event-related Potentials in Processing the Second Language Syntax: Late Bilinguals

Background: The P600 brain wave reflects syntactic processes in response to different first language (L1) syntactic violations, syntactic repair, structural reanalysis, and specific semantic components. Unlike semantic processing, aspects of the second language (L2) syntactic processing differ from the L1, particularly at lower levels of proficiency. At higher L2 proficiency, syntactic violatio...

Published in: Language Learning 60: 21-43. Morphological Structure in Native and Non-Native Language Processing

This article presents a selective overview of studies that have investigated how advanced adult second language (L2) learners process morphologically complex words. The studies reported here have used different kinds of experimental tasks (including speeded grammaticality judgments, lexical decision, or priming) to examine three domains of morphological processing (regular and irregular inflect...
